New Image Art is pleased present a solo exhibition “Decision Making” in our project room with Oakland based painter Zachary Garrett featuring a series of new abstract paintings and documentary film by Chaz Bear. This will be the gallery’s first time working with Zachary.
Notes from the artist:
“These paintings were all made at the last minute. Last minute; meaning that when I make a mark in whatever I am doing, it will be the only time I will ever get to make that mark. A small amount of time is rarely given; it’s only me that creates that sense of urgency. Not being satisfied with a mark is something intolerable so the mark is gone over and reconstructed. When improvised mistakes are repeated I don’t find that fun. I find fun in making a free decision that results in an overall sound construct. There is pressure (internal and external) with every free decision and in turn it becomes a performance of sorts. One that is not relative to the people watching but only to the performer. The end goal is to make something without knowing the end goal but knowing that it will end up as a representation of the way one strives.”
The exhibition runs from January 13th to February 10th with normal gallery hours or by appointment. An opening reception for the artist will be held in conjunction with Chaz Bear’s opening on Saturday, January 13th, from 7 to 10 pm in the project room at New Image Art.
