In the context of perception, heuristics refer to mental shortcuts or “rules of thumb” that enable us to quickly make decisions, form judgments, and solve problems. These cognitive strategies are programmed in animals and humans to enable survival under critical circumstances, and are thus based on instinct, experience, and common sense rather than extensive reasoning or analysis.
For contemporary art, heuristic interpretation varies based on art historical background and formal training. Art history savants may have heuristics encompassing a comprehensive cornucopia of cultural references, symbol recognition, and stylistic categorizations which enable more nuanced judgments. On the other hand, individuals without such a formal background can bring a fresh and raw perspective, and their heuristics entail more emotional and personal responses to the aesthetics of the artwork.
“Threshold” delves into the psychology of interpretation, embracing the cognitive diversity inherent in the act of both art creation and art consumption.
