“There is a dance that takes place in the shadow of an instant; all creatures of all different periods decide to meet. The ghost of practicing illegal acts is alive in strong lines. The political act against today’s corporate conundrum, a rude way for selfish teenagers to be ignorant, a personal representation of self through the subjective medium of art. Chaos Pays.” – HORFEE
New Image Art is proud to present CHAOS PAYS, the first North American solo exhibition of Beaux Arts graduate and Parisian street artist Horfee. Through drawings, murals, paintings, and object making Horfee explores the creative methods of spontaneity and experimentation that have made his eccentric graffiti and studio work internationally recognized in Europe and abroad. Over the past few years Horfee has exhibited in various prestigious international institutions including the National Gallery in Prague, Kulturhuset Art Center in Stockholm, and the Palais de Tokyo in France among others.
As Horfee has continued to evolve artistically, so has his desire to engage in more concept-driven work within the gallery setting. Drawing influence from historical avant-garde art movements including the Cobra movement, the Gutai group, and Tachisme, Horfee’s paintings evoke a sense of physicality and action that compliment and relate to his work outside the gallery. His semi-abstract paintings are imbued with vibrant color, improvisational brush/spray techniques, and often depict distorted representational references inspired by his fascination with underground comic and zine cultures.
The discipline Horfee gained through actions outdoors must, in his eyes, continue to remain as a major source of inspiration indoors. Above all, the most important thing beyond the outlines, fill-ins, and travels is to convey the feeling initially had while creating. In the end it’s not about abandoning outside endeavors for inside but rather presenting both in a seamless existence that can be observed for what it is; expression.
