In the age of the technocratic state, we are living in a time where everything has become hyper digital, hyper stimulating, and most of all hyper visual. As the world at large drudges deeper into the digital void, our language morphs into one of memes and emojis. This mode of communication for the 21st century is one of bold and simple, electric semiotics. The means of sharing is now through graphic symbols, logos, and images, which is most of all akin to the surroundings of NYC, a place in which Erik Foss calls his home. Foss conjures his practice from the lingering unconsciousness of the glowing advertisements, perverse cartoons, and the many symbols that encompass both his physical and digital realm. His visual language signals the very essence of what makes the screen so alluring, painting static multi-colored multiverses, that help him grapple with the pervading sense of love and hate with the screen. He has built his own graphic lexicon based on some of the most popular characters that exist on the internet like the; memetic cat, the iconic smiley face, the omni-present rainbow, and of course the infamous, serpent. He has grown notability for his airbrushed work, where he pushes the definition of post-internet art and questions the foundation of the hierarchy of the painting cannon. His colors lean to atmospheric blues, vibrant purples and neon yellows with hot pink accents. Serpents and Rainbows is a familiar zone, one where the url becomes the irl, leaving you asking where does physical reality begin and where does the digital reality end.
