New Image Art is pleased to present Held, the debut solo exhibition by Corrine Slade opening Saturday, November 20th, 2021 from 7 PM to 9 PM. This is Slade’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles and with the gallery.

Corrine Slade’s paintings depict black women in imagined settings to create a sense of otherworldliness. The figures are immersed in dream-like spaces that Slade finds comforting. Imagery that frequently appears in her work includes; fruit, flowers, and plants. These natural objects act as symbols of plentifulness, growth, and fertility. They suggest the beauty of my world and the beings that exist within it. Her process consists of layering different thicknesses and opacities of oil paint over bright acrylic underpaintings. She utilizes the luminosity of acrylic paint to create auras emitting from my figures, illustrating their romantic energy. The growth of the natural world is intrinsically linked to the growth of the human spirit.

Slade states, “The places that I constructed for black women are environments of solace that do not exist for us in this world. As I build scenery, a new tactile reality forms.” The paintings become an escape for the viewer. The land becomes a nest for the figures.

Her current explorations consider questions about what happens within her atmospheric world when she shifts the scale of the human figure. Her darkly lit fantasy realms are a glimmer into a fantasy, where the earth meets reverie.

Corrine Slade (b. 1998, Montclair, New Jersey) is a painter that depicts black women in sublime natural environments. The places that she constructs are retreats for solace that do not exist in this world. Her practice is driven by her ever-increasing need for escapism. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Science and Industry's “Black Creativity Juried Art Exhibition.” She is currently residing in Chicago. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in May 2020.
