Two cities from the East Coast come to blow out LA in a group show at New Image Art Gallery opening March 4th. Andrew Jeffery Wright of Space 1026 has put together a line-up from Providence, RI and Philadelphia, PA that brings the color, energy and graphics of their RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) influences to Los Angeles through April 2nd. The show will include silk screen prints by Philly’s Isaac Lin, Thom Lessner’s humorous paintings of rock stars and Jim Houser’s crisp and graphically narrative paintings, as well as photographs from Adam Wallacavage and videos and books by Dan Murphy. The crew from Providence includes former members of the now-defunct artist collective Fort Thunder such as Brian Chippendale, also a member of the band Lightening Bolt; Mat Brinkman and Leif Goldberg, whose work was featured in the Whitney’s 2002 Biennial; and Jung Hong; as well as the works of Jo Dery and Xander Marro. “P-Towns” will highlight two of the most renowned urban pockets of creativity that have sprouted up recently in America and the collaborations and collectives they have spawned. Their colorful, graphic design sensibilities combine definitively with the precise yet loose quality of their work to put the art of these East Coast cities at the forefront of what’s now.
